Julian Assange published the details of War Crimes, including the killing of children, committed by the USA in Afghanistan and Iraq. In retaliation the USA is trying to extradite Assange to face trumped up charges of “espionage”.
Despite not being convicted of any crime Assange has been held in solitary confinement in Her Majesty’s High Security Prison Belmarsh since 2019. Assange’s health has been broken by the treatment he has received in Belmarsh.
Amnesty International said “It is a damning indictment that nearly twenty years on, virtually no one responsible for alleged US war crimes committed in the course of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars has been held accountable, let alone prosecuted, and yet a publisher who exposed such crimes is potentially facing a lifetime in jail.
Publishing information that is in the public interest is a cornerstone of media freedom and the public's right to information about government wrongdoing. Publishing information in the public interest is protected under international human rights law and should not be criminalised”.
